Do you make people feel invisible?

August 14, 20261 min read

Walk down the street. Heads down. Eyes down.

Step into a lift and everyone suddenly becomes fascinated by their screen.

Put the bins out at night and your neighbour pretends not to see you.

Someone who looks lonely. Uncomfortable or upset. We look away.

Humans have become remarkably good at making other humans invisible.

We tell ourselves we’re protecting our time, our space or our emotional energy.

Maybe we are.

But every time we pretend not to see someone, we quietly give others permission to do the same to us.

And the cycle continues.

We feel unseen, so we stop seeing. We feel unimportant, so we stop acknowledging.

Where does that leave us?

More connected by technology than ever... and increasingly invisible to one another.

Breaking the cycle doesn’t require a grand gesture.

Lift your eyes.

Offer a smile.

A nod. Say hello.

Acknowledge their presence.

Let another human being know...

I see you.
